There was thought of calling it the 'Ayr Tartan' but that was discarded in favour of the present name which more aptly celebrated the bicentenary of the poet's birth

but in the Highlands is known as "Breacan nan Cleirach" - the tartan of the Clergy

the gold which appears in early autumn

The colours are a combination of the Royal and Ancient Burgh of Selkirk

MATHESON RED (MODERN) - Tartans beginning with 'G' There was thought of callingThe Mathesons were involved with other clans who settled in Lochalsh, and in particular with the MacDonells of Glengarry and the MacKenzies of Kintail. The tartan has a design structure which relates to the Glengarry which dates at least to c. 1816 when a sample was certified by the chief. Note: This cloth is on a weaving schedule due to be completed end of January 2024.
